Office Basics

The schedule in our office

Our office schedule is organized in a way to help us achieve the most proficient use of our time while accomplishing the best dentistry we possibly can. While we understand accommodating other people schedule is extremely important, it’s also important to practice dentistry in the most proficient way possible so that we achieve the highest quality of care. To do that we see patients on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday only.

Tuesday and Thursday are  the busiest days they are the days that we have our fabrication appointments, new patient appointments, follow-up care and adjustment appointments. This gives people options on when they like to come in to see us between 8 and 5. On Wednesdays, we schedule big case projects requiring longer appointments. When somebody needs a reline done or a big repair where we have to keep a denture for a period of time we schedule our patient in the morning to be able to do impressions or procedures that we need to get done then we have a 5 hour block of time in the middle of our Wednesday to complete the lab work associated with this patient who is unable to eat or and able to run around and smile because we’ve had to keep their teeth for the day. We always schedule this day so that we can minimize the time a patient is without their teeth we generally see patients from 8 to 10 and then we return their dentures to them between 3 and 5 in the afternoon.

Mondays, why don’t you work Mondays?

Everybody always asks why we don’t work Mondays. We absolutely do work Mondays. We work every Monday, we just don’t see patients on Mondays, we don’t schedule patient appointments on Mondays, and you want to make sure you call before you come to see us because on Mondays often the door is still locked. We might be doing a training or having a staff meeting. Most likely we’re upstairs in the lab making a whole bunch of noise and we don’t even notice that somebody is around. These are the days when we work quietly to focus on what we need to get done for the dentures that we are building. This uninterrupted lab time is one of the most precious things we have in our week. It ensures that we are able to fabricate new dentures for people with focused attention on only their care. We consider this lab time to be equally as important as the time we spend with patients chair-side.

What about Friday’s?

My office team, Rob, Sandy and Valerie, don’t work in the office on Friday. Kathryn is typically off in Augusta. Kathryn can be found working in Augusta as a member of the Board of Dental Practice, the Maine State Licensing Board who issues licenses, reviews educational programs, and works with the legislature on rules relating to the practice of dentistry. The mission of the State Board of Dental Practice is to protect the public. Kathryn's participation in the Maine State board takes her from the area at least two Fridays a month and she enjoys working diligently to ensure the protection of the people in the state of Maine. This board appointment is something that is awarded by the governor of the state of Maine and is a five-year term. Currently Kathryn’s sits as the only denturist on the nine-member board with two dental hygienists, one member of the public and five dentists. Kathryn also sits on the rule subcommittee which is the component of the Dental Board working to review and edit of the rules relating to dental practice to ensure they stay in compliance with and properly enforce the scope of practice laws set forth in the legislature. Who were the dental students?

Throughout the year you’ll often see dental students joining Kathryn in many of her days. Kathryn is adjunct faculty for Tufts University and there are dental graduated dentists who have completed their education and are licensed doctors in the state; but, they’re working through their Residency program for a year from Tufts University. These newly licensed doctors who are working for additional education come to spend time with Kathryn, learning more about removable prosthetics. Kathryn will always ask somebody if it’s alright to have a student join them during an appointment. If you have a particular interest in working with a dental student please mention it to Kathryn because we’re always looking for good examples or denture patients who are willing to share their story. Kathryn has one particular patient who lost her teeth when she was 14 years old who has had multiple sets of dentures, she’s a wonderful denture patient to work with and Kathryn always schedules this woman to see every dental student she can so they can learn from her unique story.

Financing

Let’s talk about the difficult part for many people in acquiring dental care, money. It’s often a discouraging part of every treatment plan to try and tailor it to an individual’s insurance plan or personal finances. Often these things dictate what is possible, but not always what is best. One of the things we work to create is a treatment plan that we think is in your best interest. Dental insurance frequently does not cover all of a person’s proposed treatment when they are getting dentures, especially if it’s dentures and extractions and fillings and multiple providers doing multiple different types of care.

Office staff is always willing to work with somebody to set up a CareCredit financing program through the office. You can apply either with an application when your in the office for your consultation or on your own online at www.carecredit.com. We do not independently do financing or payment plans through the office, this is something we have tried to do over the years and it generally does not work out well for either our office or for the patient. As an office we try to keep our costs down and pass those savings along to you.

The focus in the office is on patient care and taking the time to slow down and meet the needs of each individual patient. When you come into the office, it’s important to us that you are given the time and consideration that each appointment needs. We schedule our appointments so that each treatment room has a full 45 minutes even for small office visits. We don’t book fast schedules from run people through the office in 10-minute appointment scales like so much of the healthcare industry today.

We are happy to bill your insurance for its portion of any care that it will cover but we do ask that your portion be paid for in full by the time the dentures leave the office. If you do not have dental insurance assisting you with the cost of care then what we typically do is collect half when we start and half when we finish your denture(s). If we need to do something differently we certainly can have a conversation with about it but the dentures do need to be paid for in full by the day you take them home.
